2011 Fall Career Fair Summary Executive Summary: Student participation decreased significantly from the previous year, down 22.6% while employer participation was up significantly by 14.3%. The Jones College of Business had just over a quarter of the student and alumni participants followed by the College of Basic and Applied Science and the College of Behavioral and Heath Sciences, both tied at 18.5%. The top two ways students found out about the fair was from faculty (34.8%) and email (18.4%). Over 75% of employers gave an overall ranking of excellent or good for the Fair out of a four point scale (excellent, good, fair, poor). Of all areas evaluated, student quantity and quality received more of the fair and poor rankings. This includes student participation, ability of students to introduce themselves, first impression of students, and quality of student resumes. This report contains the following sections: A. Very quality students. 3. Overall very smooth process-good organization. 4. Promote more on campus and in the local community 5. What are the means of marketing the job fair to students? Several comments from the students said that they just heard about the event from a fellow student 6. Great work guys! Not as many students this year but the 3 I have are strong. 7. The turnout was low. I think it should be required to attend. Many of the students were not dressed appropriately. Everyone was nice but the vendors outnumbered the participants. 8. Might need to publicize event to students. 9. Other years have been higher volume of students. Stop telling students only need one page resumes. Should showcase all experience. 10. Good setup, good food, low student participation. 11. Better advertisement within aviation department. 12. Great event - very well organized. It would have been helpful to have an address to enter into the GPS for directions. 13. Student turnout was not as good as I had hoped. Location of event was excellent. Directions stated to turn on E. Main Street but I was able to eventually find my way over to the Murphy Center. 14. Add a directions link or address to career web site. 15. My booth was at the end of the line (dead end) so many students turned around before getting to my table. I would suggest a continuous line of companies. Otherwise it was a great event. 16. Name tags for students. Would like Sales to be a category during registration for business type. 17. Could provide table covers and trash cans more available. 18. It may be better to have the event closer to the classrooms on campus so that more students attend. Also quality of resumes were poor so coaching students on resume writing is needed. 20. Work around student schedules. Inconsistent waves/influx of students. Good location, good food, inconsistent traffic flow. 21. Don't have students come just for the class requirements. It's a waste of our time. 22. Would like to see more professional dress. Event is one hour too long. 23. Students don't seem to be very motivated. 24. People need to have resumes on hand. Plenty came empty handed. 25. Students would benefit from interview prep/first impressions training. They didn't seem prepared for business related conversations and interactions. 26. Many students dressed well--very professional. Some may need a little more coaching to be taken seriously. Overall, this was a positive experience today. 27. Encourage students to dress professionally and bring resumes. First impressions matter! Overall it was a very successful event. 28. Move recruiting events earlier in semester would work better for our staffing schedule. 29. The event could have been a bit shorter. Maybe 10-2. The lunch was amazing. 30. Fall 25, Spring 8, Summer 0 Graduate/Professional School Comments: 1. Maybe change the time to 2:00 to 6:00-might allow more students to participate. 2. Maybe be 1 hour shorter. I think a separate fair for grad schools brings more intentional students, but the mixture allows for more overall attendance. This event was well attended and had a lot of traffic. One of the best fairs I have attended so far. Could use assistance bringing materials from parking lot upstairs. 3. If you have a separate grad fair I would encourage you to possibly have a separate Pu Health or have the medschool, pharm, nursery, etc. in an area together, separate from law, MBA, etc. 4. Thanks! Y’all rock…Go Blue Raiders. 5. Combining the Grad and Career fairs is a good idea, however, the layout needs work. Grouping the representatives by practice area would be helpful. (Maybe so that grad schools are on one side of the aisle and corporations/employers are on another.) For the students, it is efficient to have both represented. I talked to a number of students today who were trying to decide between grad school and working. This event helped them. Also, unlike most students who attend only a grad school fair, these students came with resumes which facilitated a more meaningful discussion about professional goals and our application process. 6. 10-2 or 10-1 maybe a better time frame. Was too lengthy. 7. Combine grad schools together in 1 section. 8. A bit spread out. If you continue to combine career and graduate events, put all grad schools together. If planning a separate grad event, hold it where there is a lot of student traffic and also close to parking. 9. Great job! 10. Very well done. Great food. 11.
